Creative Entrepreneurship Summit: Where Passion and Profit meet


Who says you can’t earn from doing something you love? With all the opportunities available around us today, there is no reason why you can’t pursue your passion and not earn from it. Hence, the center focus of the first ever Creative Entrepreneurship Summit: Where Passion and Profit Meet launched by the Writer’s Block Philippines, held at Top Shelf, Fully Booked Bonifacio Global City, on 31 January 2015.

Successful writers, creative professionals and social media personalities gathered together to inspire and motivate aspiring writers and entrepreneurs to realize the possible opportunities that they can get from pursuing their creative passion.

Starting with the founder of, Anton Diaz, is the former Chief Information Officer of Proter & Gamble Philippines and now a full time Online Entrepreneur. With his advocacy to promote the “Food and Travel Secrets in the Philippines”, his blog is now the #1 food and travel blog in the Philippines.


Started as a simple love letter to his kids, his blog was warmly received and now has a close to 1,000,000 hits in just one and a half month since it was established in 2005. Its 120,000+ followers and 10,200+ readers continue to grow.


Diaz generously shared the business model that he used in his successful blog and gave tips on how to successfully start your own blog and become a successful online entrepreneur.


His discussion was immediately followed and fueled up by the motivating talk of one of the most eloquent and award-winning hosts that the country has today, RJ Ledesma, who also authors a number of best selling books like Is It Hot In Here Or Is It Me? and It Only Hurts When I Pee, to name a few.


He opened the reality that creative entrepreneurship is not as easy as it sounds. There are different factors that need to be considered. First, it is important to find out the very thing you are passionate about. Second, find out your competitive advantage within the ‘creative industry’ you want to belong to. Third, build your own reputation and expertise. It is also important to understand what you are willing to give up to pursue your passion. Quitting your day job is not also necessary.


According to him, it is also important to reboot yourself and hone your skills. Change is inevitable and it happens very fast. What may be acceptable and good before, may not be as acceptable and as good today. Finding the appropriate business model for your creative endeavor is also important.

He wrapped up his talk by giving emphasis to the importance of marketing oneself using social media.


The summit continues with Darlyn Ty, founder of the famous Belle De Jour Power Planner, which has evolved from a simple planner to a community aimed to empower women to try, dare, achieve, discover and live their best lives.


With the success of Belle De Jour, Ty generously shared the business model that has made the acclaimed planner to be a big hit today.


Another interesting and inspiring talk was given by Michael Josh Villanueva, a multimedia journalist, digital strategist and social media evangelist.20150131_164612

His talk opened opportunities on how to convert creative passion into creating engaging content and videos. He gave tips on how to be a successful youtuber, which include, producing great content, being consistent with your material and finding your niche. He also emphasizes important tips that should be considered before making an engaging and shareable videos, which include, great concept, basic equipment, own space to record your videos, fast upstream internet and lastly, lots of practice.


Inspiration tanks of the participants in attendance were continued to be filled up as Mina V. Esguerra, a famous contemporary romance, young adult, and new adult novella writer, shared wonderful tips on how to be a good writer and many ways on how to earn from this craft.

She generously shared with everybody some of the platforms she used to market her stories. Some of these platforms include digital/ebooks, digital publishing partnerships, print on demand and publishing partnerships. There are also other ways to earn from your passion, and these involve merchandising of your products, translation and adaptations.


Lastly, Vince Golangco, founder and publisher of, the top online magazine in the Philippines, gave a really powerful talk to everyone. He shared useful tips and online trends to guide the participants in their plans of establishing their own blogs or website.


Some of them includes, the ideal number of words when creating content (3000 – 10,000 words), type of article shared the most (infographics), best day of the week to post a blog content(Tuesday) to name a few.


Writing is no easy job and from what we know about it, there is not much money in this career. Well, that was before. With the current trends and changes we have today, writing has now become one of the most in demand professions. With the power of social media and the Internet, writers can now easily wag their digital pens, make their voice be heard, earn a living, all at the same time.

But success in writing can’t be done in just one night. Creative entrepreneurship is not a “one time big time” thing, just like any other businesses, it needs to be exposed and marketed efficiently.
